For 21 years Bluegrass Brewing Company, known to locals as BBC, has been bringing award winning craft beer and delicious American cuisine to the Louisville scene. Pat and Lamont Hagan opened the BBC in 1993 which was the start of a trend towards local and craft beers. With the addition of Crescent Hill Craft House they are still focused on providing both local beers and food to the Louisville area.
A lot of things have changed since the grand opening. The original BBC location at 3929 Shelbyville Rd is located on the old A&P grocery site and was first occupied by Sharkey’s restaurant and then Colbys. The surrounding local businesses at that time were Bacons Furniture store, Plehn’s bakery, Dutch’s Tavern and Mayers Tavern. The 3900 block of Shelbyville Road has grown tremendously in the last few years and is full of restaurants and bars.
When BBC opened in November of 1993 there were less than 300 microbreweries in the US, now there are over 2800. Craft brewing and local products continue to grow in popularity. According to the Brewers Association, the craft beer industry grew over 18% in 2013. BBC originally employed approximately 50 people and now with 3 locations in Louisville employs approximately 150.
To celebrate the occasion Bluegrass Brewing Company will be remaking some of our earlier menu items such as Shark Bites, Jamaican Jerk Sandwich and Chipotle Pork Tenderloin as well as releasing our Anniversary Ale which is an American Style Nut Brown Ale. Beers will be $2.25 all day, which was the price of our beer when we opened in 1993. There will be contests throughout the day and music by the Allmanacs at night to cap off the celebration.
